A delicious family tradition for the Thanksgiving bird. Submitted by: JasonPrep Time: 10 Minutes Cook Time: Approximately 2-3 Hours |
1 turkey (whole, thawed)
1/3 cup olive oil
1 Tbsp garlic powder
1 tsp dried basil
1/2 tsp ground sage
1/2 tsp salt
Optional: apple juice
1. Remove giblets, neck and gravy packet. Rinse the turkey inside and out.
2. Gently loosen the skin from the meat.
3. Mix together garlic powder, dried basil, ground sage, and salt.
4. Grab small amounts of the mixture and rub them onto the meat under the skin. Do this until all the seasoning is used.
5. Tack down the edges of the skin with toothpicks. The skin will shrink and look leathery.
6. Rub olive oil on the outside of skin.
7. Place the bird on heavy duty aluminum foil on a medium heat grill.
8. Cook until thickest part of thigh meat is 180 degrees. Keep an eye on the grill, as flare-ups are possible.
9. Baste turkey with natural juices inside bird or with apple juice.
9. Take the turkey off the grill and allow to rest 15 minutes. Remove the skin from the bird and carve the turkey.
